US COAST GUARD BUOY TENDERS

The lead ships of two classes of US Coast Guard Buoy tenders have recently been launched. The larger of the two vessels is the WLB and the lead ship has been named JUNIPER. This is classified as seagoing and is 225ft long. The smaller class is a group of coastal buoy tenders and the lead vessel has been named IDA LEWIS. The class designator in this case is WLM and the vessels are 175ft long. The WLB is a single screw vessel with a CP propeller supplemented by bow and stern thrusters. Buoy handling is carried out on the foredeck with a crane mounted at the aft end of the raised forecastle. The WLM is intended for coastal work, primarily buoy tending but, like the WLB vessels, having a general purpose subsidiary role including EEZ vigilance, search and rescue and icebreaking. The overall layout is broadly similar to the WLB class. General arrangement drawings of both classes are included in the article.
