REDUCTION OF LIFE-CYCLE COSTS FOR AN AMPHIBIOUS TRANSPORT SHIP (ATS/LPD)

A full diesel-electric propulsion for the amphibious transport ship has reached the stage of realisation. This paper summarises the alternatives for the propulsion plant and argues that, based on initial costs, through-life costing and the latest commercial developments, a diesel electric plant is not only the most cost effective alternative, but also the best solution to meet the operational requirements.
