RESPONSE BASED DESIGN CRITERIA FOR MARINE RISERS
This paper describes the formulation of a suitable methodology for the development of response based design criteria. Criteria for critical responses corresponding to a specified exceedance probability, are formulated in terms of the input variables rather than the response itself. The goal is to identify the most likely sets as well as the most practical sets of combinations of the environmental variables which produce the extreme response with the specified exceedance probability. The methodology is applied to the design of a deep-sea riser. Criteria for the angles at the top and the bottom of the riser corresponding to selected exceedance probabilities are formulated in terms of the significant wave height and the current velocities.
