THE FUTURE DIRECTION OF SHIPBUILDING IN RUSSIA

This paper provides a summary of the results of the analysis of the ways of solving a wide range of problems faced by Russian shipbuilders, following the disintegration of the USSR and the end of the cold war between East and West. The views and understanding of the new role of the Navy are based on the main principles of the military doctrine of Russia. The state and potential of the Russian shipbuilding industry at a time of global economic reform, large-scale conversion and significant limitations in the financing of the naval shipbuilding program are examined. Policy with regard to the main trends in the development, the characteristics and classes of the Navy's ships are discussed, taking into account the new role of the Navy and the economic position of the country. Much attention is given in the paper to the idea of the development of specific projects as a result of military, technical and scientific collaboration. The realisation of such collaborative projects, with the Navy's technical means, will be one of the main spheres of navies' potential peace- time contributions in the humanitarian and economic fields.
