THE NEW GENERATION AVISO PATROL VESSEL

The French Navy has historically been charged with the protection of France's coastlines and territories. During the last two decades this mission has been carried out by the A69 class of avisos (patrol vessels), which although small have considerable deterrence capabilities. Building on this success, a concept for a new generation of aviso patrol vessel has been developed, which combines lessons learned from previous ships with new technologies in stealth, composite materials and modularity derived from the La Fayette Frigate program. The new generation aviso has been designed as a simple and robust vessel through the judicious of both military and commercial standards, with emphasis on producibility and combat system flexibility. This has resulted in a craft of 87m, displacing 1500t, which can be fitted either for either patrol, anti surface warfare or anti submarine warfare missions. This paper describes the design capabilities of the new generation aviso, which represents a credible and affordable answer to the increasing requirements of the world's navies for patrol vessels.
