MANAGING RAN MAINTENANCE COST EFFECTIVELY

A review of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ship maintenance found that the maintenance philosophy and associated practices were neither optimised nor cost efficient. A revised maintenance philosophy has been developed that, when fully implemented, will significantly change the way maintenance is viewed, managed and conducted. The philosophy will both focus on the business requirements of the Navy and devolve more responsibility and authority to the ship level. Essentially, this top-down bottom-up approach will offer greater flexibility in the use of resources and provide the information requirements that are necessary to calculate the cost of fleet ownership, and predict the material usage cost against defined operational activities.
