QUIET GAS TURBINE GENSETS FOR COVERT MARINE OPERATION
The authors' company proposes the combination of existing technologies to produce an optimum solution for onboard power generation in the 1-1.5 MW range. Using reliable technology developed for Turbotrain axle drives and variable speed propeller drives on Tripartite minesweepers, the logical conclusion is to combine the two to produce a high-speed alternator, driven by a gas turbine but without a gearbox. This application makes use of the creation of high-speed alternators developed by various companies, of sufficient power output to enable more efficient power generation. The result is a generator set (genset), a quarter of the weight of a standard gas turbine and one sixth of the standard diesel genset, with a 600V three phase Hz output in the range of 1000-1500 kVA, giving reduced levels of low frequency noise transmitted to the hull through ships' mountings and a lower magnetic signature and radiated airborne noise.
