LOOKING BACK TO THE FUTURE

The science of corrosion is now on a firm basis and a well respected discipline, the author questions how firm the application is to maritime engineering, the task of the naval architect who has to encompass all aspects of the design, construction, operation and maintenance, even the safe disposal of the marine artefact. Also considered is how well all concerned understand the insidious nature of corrosion in the marine environment, the potentially high risk of catastrophic failure and the impact on the financier, owner, designer, operator and, very important, the role of the professional institution in education, training and the dissemination of information into the maritime engineering community.
