THE STATISTICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WAVE DATA IN THE NORTH PACIFIC AND LONG-TERM PREDICTIONS

The paper discusses the influence on long-term predictions of ship responses by using Global Wave Statistics (GWS) data with special emphasis given to its scatter diagram rounded by one thousandth (1/1000), which has been studied for the North Atlantic in a previous paper. In order to compare with other wave data which are generally rounded by 0.01/1000, GWS standard scatter diagrams of significant wave height and zero-crossing wave period are also suggested to correct to a round number of 0.01/1000 by fitting a model of the conditional log-normal distribution for zero-crossing wave period in the North Pacific. The statistical characteristics both corrected an uncorrected for ship acceleration in the vertical direction is given. Based on this comparison and former comparisons it is shown that the influence on long-term predictions of the ship response by using original GWS data may not be neglected, and it is necessary to compare with others when GWS data is used for the long-term predictions of ship response.
