LOSS OF THE ESTONIA: A TECHNICAL INTERIM APPRAISAL
The article summarises the recently published Part-Report on the loss of the ro-ro ferry ESTONIA in September 1994. The report records various weld failures and cracks and notes that several other ferries have suffered visor lock failures. It is also noted that the forward ramp arrangement and the absence of a correctly located upper extension to the collision bulkhead were typical of many large contemporary ferries, despite the fact that these did not meet SOLAS requirements.
