COMMUNITY CONSULTATION IN ROAD PLANNING

In Australia the community is now demanding that planners give greater consideration to the social and physical environment. Many sections of the public are demanding that they have a democratic right to be involved in the planning of major public works that may affect their lives. Planners and politicians are becoming increasingly aware that planning is an open-ended system. Community consultation provides feedback which permits a realistic amalgam of social values and physical needs. In this paper the authors have attempted to demonstrate some of the reasons for this demand for consultation at all stages in the planning process and to indicate in broad terms the major elements of a community consultation programme. It is concluded that such a programme, developed to give adequate recognition to community goals and transportation requirements, will assist in obtaining a solution acceptable to all parties. /TRRL/
