SHIP DESIGN PROCESS FOR THE ROYAL NETHERLANDS NAVY

In this article some aspects of the design process for the Royal Netherlands Navy are described. Because of shrinking defense budgets and the tendency towards more complicated and costly weapon systems, the design-to-cost principle is of growing importance. By function analysis, function allocation and cost- and operational effectiveness assessment an optimum and well balanced solution for the ship platform can be reached. A short description is given of the Netherlands Defence equipment selection process, which gives information of the decision process leading to and controlling the procurement and introduction of ships in the navy. An overview of the applied, above mentioned design methods is given.
