THE EFFECT OF SALTS ON STEELS AND PROTECTIVE COATINGS
An attempt has been made to define the maximum allowable limits of salt contamination of steel surfaces depending on the substrate and subsequent use. In particular, two research programmes are discussed. One, the incidence of stress corrosion cracking and intergranular attack of stainless steel exposed to a moist air. The second, a 61/2 year exposure to the atmospheric environment of alkyd paints applied to pre-contaminated carbon steel.
