A STUDY ON THE WELDING OF HIGH-STRENGTH STAINLESS STEEL FOR THE ULTRA-HIGH-SPEED HYDROFOIL
The authors made a study on the welding of a high-strength stainless steel (13Cr-5Ni-1 Mo). The material will be used on the submerged foils and struts of an ultra-high-speed hydrofoil. Various welding methods such as shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, plasma arc welding, and electron beam welding were examined for application to the steel, through the development of welding consumables and studies of welding conditions. Tensile properties, toughness, microstructure, fatigue strength, corrosion resistance, and cavitation erosion resistance of weld joints were studied. Based on these studies, 13Cr-5Ni Mo steel was confirmed as having sufficient performance and good weldability for use on the hydrofoil.
