IMPROVING THE TRANSPORTATION/LAND USE ENVIRONMENT IN EXISTING URBAN AREAS
The need to consider the problems resulting from road traffic flows through the existing urban transport network is generally given a very low priority by most responsible authorities. Three lines of action to improve the transportation/land use environment are examined in this paper. Examples of recent work in the Adelaide area are described. In general terms, it is concluded that conversion of X-intersections to T-junctions, closure of local streets to prevent intrusion of through traffic into residential precincts and the separation of pedestrian-oriented activities from through and local vehicular traffic will have benefits which outweigh the costs. /Author/TRRL/
