A MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM AS AN ESTIMATING TOOL
A management information system used by a fast ferry operator in Hong Kong is described. The system analyses actual operating costs, overall traffic patterns and effects of competition. The system is used to make forecasts of future costs based on analyses of existing costs. It is used to forecast future passenger traffic based on analyses of traffic growth and competition; to estimate future ticket revenue based on historical fare increases; and to forecast future revenue and profits based on all of the above. Managers of companies contemplating new fast ferry services can also use the techniques described to estimate the financial viability of their new operations before actually making the heavy financial commitment to purchase the vessels.
