PUBLIC LIGHTING IN SHEPWAY DISTRICT COUNCIL
The public lighting department is responsible for approximately 6000 lighting points plus many hundreds of illuminated traffic signs, bollards, etc. Within an area of approximately 140 sq. miles and which has a population of some 88000 people. The author describes the departmental organisation, the developments which have taken place in the provision of better lighting systems for both class a and class b conditions, and the attention which has been paid to the installation of lighting designed to blend in with buildings and areas of architectural interest. The development programmes undertaken have included the conversion from high-wattage mercury vapour to low-wattage sodium, leading to a 57 per cent saving in power for the equivalent light output; and the use of high-pressure sodium lighting in some areas with a power consumption saving of 32 percent for the same light output. /TRRL/
