PUBLIC LIGHTING - THE CHANGING SCENE
The author discusses the problems of meeting demands for savings and economies in public lighting costs, against a background of increasing standards of illumination as requested by the road user. Reference is made to the development of new and improved equipment as aids to improved performance, and the development of new control gear with lower power losses is cited as an example of such work being undertaken by manufacturers. The work being carried out by the public lighting section at Hastings as an agent of the East Sussex Country Council is described and illustrated. This section was given a mandate to raise the standard of street lighting, and the programme, which included standardisation of equipment, and the use of colour corrected mercury discharge lamps for Class A and B installations is discussed. Mention is also made of the upgrading of principal road lighting from 25ft to a 10 metre mounting height, the maintenance of steel columns, and the problems associated with time switches. /TRRL/
