DEVELOPING A CARGO CARRYING HIGH SPEED RO-RO MONOHULL
In March 1993, EUROYARDS, a group of five major European shipyards initiated the EUROFAST technical group to gain overall knowledge of all types of fast ships and to evaluate for each type of ship, not only the technical feasibility, but also the exact compatibility of a design for a given trade or route. This paper describes the EUROFAST basic ship. Speed/length ratio, stability, flow of traffic on board were taken into consideration and a monohull ship of 170m length between perpendiculars was selected as most suitable. Extensive comparative model tests for resistance, propulsion and seakeeping (on regular and irregular seas) were performed on two different sets of lines to define the optimum hull form. The results were promising with outstanding seakeeping performances. Trucks will be loaded on two decks on a one way traffic flow over 6 lanes. A cruising range of up to 500 nautical miles can be achieved due to the large capacity provided for fuel tanks. EUROYARDS are working with the International Maritime Organization and other working groups to discuss further improvements of safety standards for ferries and ro/ro vessels. As a consequence, any improvements required in this field will be incorporated immediately into the EUROFAST design.
