ROAD BLOCKS AHEAD
The author describes a reawakening interest in 'small element' paving in the form of concrete paving blocks. Such paving has been popular on the continent for many years and the Cement and Concrete Association has launched a campaign to promote it in the U.K. The method of laying the blocks is described and their advantages reviewed. These include variety in shape and easy removal and replacement in trench cutting. The compressive strength of the concrete used is set at 50 n per square millimetre, a strength unlikely to be vulnerable to frost. Illustrations are given of the use of concrete blocks in England and abroad. Costs cannot be estimated accurately because of the lack of competition at present but excluding the sub-base and kerb laying a price range of about found4-found5.20 per square metre is suggested. /TRRL/
