WELLINGTON URBAN MOTORWAY - THE TERRACE TUNNEL

A series of articles on the Terrace Tunnel of the Wellington Urban Motorway are presented. The designers of the tunnel faced a combination of a wide range of ground conditions, limited cover, large size, and location in a densely developed urban environment. These restraints necessitated an intensive investigation and evaluation of ground conditions and the application of modern developments in the design process. The articles are as follows: General Features, Preston, RL (including details of location, functional requirements, geology, investigations, design and construction contract); Engineering Geological Investigations, Riddolls, BW and Perrin, ND; Underground Design, Wilcox, PJ (including details of geometrics, investigations, loading assumptions based on rock condition, future instrumentation, underground design, cut and cover tunnel and internal finishes); Jet-Fan Ventilation, Ostling, AR (including details of fresh air requirements, fan capacity and fan control; Electrical Services and Lighting, Caradus, WG (including details of power supplies, motorway control centre, tunnel lighting, ventilation and miscellaneous services); Tied-Back Retaining Walls, Rutledge, JC (including details of geology and topograph, tied-back walls, alternatives investigated, design methods investigated and used, soil parameters used in design, anchor bar system, the anchor drive, wall finishes, construction of walls and costs). /TRRL/
