NINE SWITCHES OF ALTERTNESS
A major tanker operator has spent considerable time and resources addressing the area of human behaviour. Their conclusion is that alertness is one area of human behaviour that has more impact then any other. Nine key internal and external factors (switches) which trigger an individual's altertness are listed which can serve as a basis for change in the design of onboard work areas, sleep patterns and watch standing routines.
