INSTRUMENTATION AND MONITORING
Some factors affecting the instrumentation and monitoring of tunnels, with particular emphasis on experience gained during the Chinnor tunnelling trials by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, are discussed. The purpose of the instrumentation and monitoring is the measurement of factors involved in tunnel construction: time and motion studies, ground characteristics, cutting forces and energies, stresses and displacements in the ground and lining. It is stressed that, in setting up an instrumentation and monitoring programme, it is essential to have a clear objective, and to calibrate the instruments, ensuring the reproducibility of ground property measurements. With reference to the Chinnor tunnelling trials the concepts of face indexing (characterising of the rock) and ground movement measurement are explained. In addition, measurements made at the shaft are summarised. /TRRL/
