IMO DISCUSSES NEW RO-RO FERRY SAFETY STANDARDS
The article discusses the proposed amendments to the IMO International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The amendments will affect Regulation 8 of Chapter II-1 which deals with the stability of passenger ships in damaged condition. If accepted they will add extra requirements specifically relating to existing ro-ro passenger ships and would take into account the effect of water accumulating on the vehicle deck and the potential vulnerability of bow and stern doors. It is expected that the amendments, if adopted, will have a considerable impact on the existing ro-ro ferry fleet and will result in many ships having to undergo extensive conversions.
