PILING NOISE - THE PROBLEMS OF MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL
The paper describes the complexities of monitoring, evaluating and controlling impulse noise such as riveting, pile driving or road breaking. Conventional sound-level monitoring equipment can be highly inaccurate when measuring impulse sound. In terms of environmental nuisance, impulse sound is of a "psycho-acoustic" nature depending not only upon objective sound level but also on subjective factors associated with impulse repetition rate and the "sharpness" of each impulse. The author comments that British Standards and government legislation do not deal adequately with the problems of impulsive noise. An attempt to use the latest British Standard for limitation of construction site noise, for the purpose of piling noise control, is described. /TRRL/
