WEST MIDLANDS ACCIDENT ANALYSIS SCHEME

The paper outlines the concepts behind an accident analysis computer system originally developed in Birmingham jointly with the PWD and police, and now extended for use for the whole of the West Midlands County area. Accident location is by road kilometerage and numbered junctions on a major road network, with minor roads identified by number and grid reference. Analysis methods and outputs are broadly described, as are the blackspot ranking systems linked to a complementary traffic flow file. The close relationship with the West Midlands police is recorded, together with the concept of joint development work. The paper details the use made of on-line computer interrogation facilities and describes the current design work linking the accident system to associated file areas of highway maintenance and street furniture, together with the wider implications seen by the use of digital linked data sets as evolved in the moss computer system. Finally the authors record the intention to develop a data input and output method using visual display units linked to the CC's ICL 1903T computer. (A) /TRRL/
