ASSESSMENT OF 1950'S VINTAGE GULF OF MEXICO PLATFORMS
The assessment of ageing Gulf of Mexico platforms is receiving considerable attention following Hurricane Andrew. The paper discusses the progressively complex process used to evaluate the fitness-for-purpose adequacy of these platforms. Three dimensional computer models of the platforms were created and design level checks were performed using provisions of API RP 2A, 20th edition. Subsequently, nonlinear ultimate strength analyses were performed using a static pushover analysis technique and the element failure sequences were determined. The failure probabilities of the platforms were also computed accounting for uncertainties in the loadings and platform resistance. The results were used to determine the fitness-for-purpose adequacy of the platforms. The analytical results are interpreted to show that the platforms can withstand 100 year storms and have the reserve strength to withstand storms with much longer return periods. The annual probability of failure is computed to be in the 10-3 range for these two platforms.
