WEIGHT TRANSFER IN TRUCKS
Inter-axle weight transfers in a semi-trailer in steady state motion are analysed. Models are derived for the effect of tractive effort on the drive bogey, the effect of tractive effort and drawbar pull on the prime mover and the effect of draw-bar pull on the trailer. Four common types of tandem bogey suspension are analysed for weight transfers in a severe situation. It is concluded that axle weights of + or - 50 per cent of static loads are probable in such situations. It should be possible to design a suspension which minimises inter-axle weight transfers, and so minimises pavement damage and improves truck performance. (a).
