STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS ON BULK CARRIERS AND SOME SOLUTIONS

On the basis of analysis of casualty information and damage data from surveyor's reports, an explanation is given for the rise in bulk carrier losses and cases of serious structural damage during 1990 and 1991. Guidance is given on early identification of structural problems and their prevention in the future. A description is also given of the steps taken by classification societies to increase resistance to damage of existing older tonnage and newer designs.
