PREVENTING A CUTOFF OF A MISSISSIPPI RIVER BENDWAY WITH TREE SCREENS
The Mississippi River flows in a broad reversing type curve immediately upstream of its confluence with the Ohio river. The land within the bendway had been cleared of most of its natural vegetation to facilitate farming. Remaining vegetation was insufficient to prevent massive amounts of surface scour during almost annual flooding. Cutoff was likely if the condition remained unchecked. This would have had very bad effects on navigation. Massive planting of tree screens appears to have averted the danger. This technique could be applied to similar problem areas.
