WAVES GENERATED BY A SHIP TRAVELLING IN STRATIFIED WATER
This paper reports on a novel numerical procedure for the time domain computation of waves generated by a body moving in a gravitationally stable dual density fluid. Slender body theory is used to convert the three dimensional moving ship problem into a series of two dimensional time domain wavemaker problems in the plane of the stations, and marching from bow to stern. The boundary element method is used to compute flow around each section. The fluid is assumed to consist of two distinct layers of slightly different densities with a discontinuity of the Brunt-Vaisala number at their interface. The thickness of the top layer is of the order of the ship draught. Boundary conditions at the common boundary are obtained by equating pressure and normal velocity calculated at that common boundary using information from both domains.
