ESQUILMAT AND NANAIMO RAILROAD COMMUTER RAIL DEMAND FEASIBILITY STUDY

Current passenger service along the Esquimalt-Nanaimo Rail Road is provided by VIA Rail. It is expected that this service will be discontinued over the coming year. Due to the strategic nature of the Esquimalt-Nanaimo corridor in the long term social and economic development of Vancouver Island, the Transportation Policy Branch has examined the feasibility of establishing commuter rail service between Ladysmith and Victoria with possible expansion to other areas of the island at a later date. This report summarizes those findings. It provides demand projections, methodology, assumptions, and conclusions.
