LAND DRAINS ACCELERATE SOFT SOIL CONSOLIDATION

A series of land drains, 6 M deep and approximately 3 M apart, has been laid to accelerate settlements and relieve pore water pressures across a 400 M section of Tadcaster by-pass. The drains were installed in an embankment by A b-600 track-mounted horizontal dewatering machine, designed to dig a 230 mm wide trench up to 6 M deep and insert granular porous media as back-fill in one operation. The drains were laid transversely to the line of the embankment, each 50 M long run taking about one hour to complete. The technique, adopted as an alternative to sand drains, is claimed to compare well on a cost basis and, in appropriate soil conditions, to be technically more efficient. /TRRL/
