SPEED AND ECONOMY IN EDGE DETAIL CONSTRUCTION
Recent developments in in situ forming of kerbs are described; in particular, the introduction of the integral kerb and channels which will carry water to drainage points without leakage into sub-surface materials. For asphalt construction, a step is incorporated into the channel edge to coincide with the junction between base and wearing course, so that the wearing course overlaps the joint between the concrete and the asphalt base. Machines that will extrude concrete or asphalt kerbs are available. The largest, model 6600, which slipforms concrete only, will produce kerb plus channel, pavement or shoulder slab to a width of 2.5 M. This model operates under electronic control from a single string-line. Under favourable conditions, a mile of concrete kerb and channel can be laid in a day. Suggested specifications for asphalt and concrete to produce good kerb and channel are quoted. Examples are given of use of the 6600 slipformer in France and Italy. /TRRL/
