PARTICLES

The UK Department of the Environment (DoE) set up the Expert Panel on Air Quality Standards in 1991, to advise on the establishment and application of air quality standards in the UK, to develop policy on air pollution control and increase public knowledge and understanding of air quality. This report is one of a series about pollutants and includes sections on the following topics: (1) the physico-chemical composition of airborne particles; (2) sources of airborne particulate matter; (3) the measurement and monitoring of airborne particles; (4) the effects of airborne politics on health; (5) the justification of an Air Quality Standard for particles; and (6) recommendations for an Air Quality Standard for particles. For example, the Panel recommends an Air Quality Standard for PM10 in the UK of 50 micro g/cu.m measured as a 24-hour running average, to be reviewed within five years. Only very brief specific reference to vehicle emissions is made.
