DEEP WEB REINFORCEMENT
The authors review recent publications and summarise the performance under load of deep beams with various types of web reinforcement. The experimental investigations into the effects of varying span-depth ratio, and shear span were confined to simply supported deep beams under two point loading applied to the top. Various configurations were tried to determine load deflections, size and distribution of cracks, modes of failure and ultimate loads. For all span-depth ratios studied inclined web reinforcement was most effective in the control of deflections and crack widths. The effectiveness of other types of web reinforcement depends on the span-depth ratio. For the very deep beams the primary cause of failure was diagonal cracking; crushing of concrete at the bearing blocks was usually a secondary fault. Vertical splitting occured above a support in the deeper beams, usually followed by crushing of the concrete near the bearing block. The properties of test beams are tabulated and various forms of web reinforcements illustrated. /TRRL/
