DEFORMABLE EXPANDED - POLYSTYRENE CONCRETE FOR TUNNEL SEGMENT JOINTS
It has been shown that a suitably shaped and reinforced concrete can be made that yields progressively as the applied load is increased, even when the concrete is crushed to less than half the initial height. This paper discusses the application of this technique in the control of strata movement around a tunnel. Previous work on mine supports suggested that epc, a concrete of expanded - polystyrene spheres in a cement paste matrix, would show suitable crush characteristics for the pad material used to form the radial joints between precast concrete segment linings in the tunnel. The epc was made by stirring expanded - polystyrene granules, 1 to 3 mm diameter into an ordinary portland cement paste. Tests are described, both in the laboratory and in application that indicated that such a concrete provided the yield characteristics needed for a specified strata control problem.
