STABILIZATION OF DECOMPOSED DOLERITE
Stabilization of natural gravels in road pavements and especially in subbases has become common in South Africa. There are however differences of opinion about the stabilizing agents to use, ie whether they should be portland cement, hydrated lime or mixtures of these materials with milled granulated blast furnace slag. Two types of decomposed dolerite gravel from the north-eastern orange free state were tested with portland cement, hydrated lime, mixtures of lime and milled slag, lime and fly-ash, and slag and fly-ash. Moulded specimens of the stabilized material were tested for unconfined compressive strength after various curing periods ranging from seven days to six months. In addition indirect tensile tests (split tensile tests), wetting and drying and shrinkage tests were also carried out. The purpose of this paper is to record the results of the tests carried out. In general it was found that specimens stabilized with portland cement and lime-slag mixtures showed better results. Hydrated lime showed good results especially with the more clayey gravel although the strength build-up took place over a longer period. Within the limitations of the method of test there seem little significant difference in the shrinkage properties of the materials when stabilized with various stabilizing agents. An approximate relationship between the unconfined compressive strength and the indirect tensile strength was found. /Author/TRRL/
