SOIL SUCTION APPLICATIONS IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING PRACTICE
This publication contains the papers presented in a technical session at the 1995 ASCE Annual Convention held in San Diego, California, October 22-26, 1995. The session was sponsored by the Committees on Shallow Foundations and Soil Properties of the Geotechnical Engineering Division of the ASCE. The papers address practical applications of using soil suction in the practice of geotechnical engineering in unsaturated soils. Case histories are emphasized. The issues addressed in these papers are intended to demonstrate the applicability of soil suction to solve problems involving geotechnical engineering problems occurring in unsaturated soils, to encourage the use of soil suction in addressing practical problems, and to show advances in applying unsaturated soil mechanics. The papers are as follows: Heave Prediction Using Soil Suction: A Case History, R.W. Thompson and R.G. McKeen; The Use of Soil Suction in Analysis of Pavement Cracking, J.B. Nevels, Jr; Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity and Water Balance Predictions for Earthen Landfill Final Covers, M.V. Khire, J.S. Meerdink, C.H. Benson, and P.J. Bosscher; and Application of Soil Suction in Dallas/Fort Worth, R.F. Reed and M. Kelley. A Subject Index and an Author Index are provided.
