DIRECTIONAL DRYING RATES FOR ANISOTROPIC CLAYS
In an effort to develop a technique for estimating the degree of fabric anisotropy, the directional drying characteristics of clay specimens with varying degrees of particle orientation were studied and interpreted. Details are outlined of the experimental program in which specimens of monominerallic kaolin clay (Hydrite-10) were prepared and tested. The specimens were weighed and coated evenly with several coats of sealing wax (50 percent paraffin and 50 percent petrolatum) along four sides, leaving the presented which show typical response patterns for the directional drying of specimens with an oriented and random fabric respectively. The test program showed that the results of simple directional drying tests can be used to identify microfabric anisotropy; however, factors such as pore fluid chemistry and macrofabric features may affect the interpretation almost as much as particle orientation. All drying curves show an initial linear portion that is essentially independent of fabric, but subsequent directional drying of oriented specimens is nonlinear with time and anisotropy. The rate of drying in the linear range (for laboratory temperature and humidity conditions) is proportional to 1.4 power of the number of exposed drying faces.
