ENERGY CONSUMPTION RELATED TO CONCRETE STRUCTURES
This comparison of the total energy consumption (including processing of raw materials) of simple load carrying structures, indicates that concrete has the lowest energy consumption. Comparisons are limited to concrete, steel and brick masonry and the energy consumption is converted to liters of oil. For steel, the energy consumption is dependent on whether the source material is ore or scrap. It was assumed in the calculations that structural steel and reinforcing have the same energy consumption. Other basic assumptions made in the calculations are outlined. The energy consumption for concrete in a completed structure consists primarily of three factors: cement content, amount of reinforcement, and transportation. A comparison of the energy consumption of a steel column, a single-wythe brick wall and an unreinforced concrete column one meter high which can carry a 1000-ton load is illustrated in a figure. The results of a comparative study of beams with different loadings and different span widths is also illustrated, and it is shown how much of the total energy consumption is caused by dead weight for beams with cast-in-situ concrete.
