DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION METRICATION ACTIVITIES
The response to the national trend toward metrication and the various activities this involves are reviewed with emphasis on changes already occurring in those areas of transportation for which the Department of Transportation (DOT) has statutory authority. DOT has direct responsibility for most if not all areas included in the definition of the physical distribution factor other than that of economic regulation. In the Office of the Secretary, authority for metrication has been divided between the Assistant Secretary for Policy and International Affairs, and the Assistant for Systems Development and Organization. The St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation of the DOT and the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority of Canada have agreed to a schedule for conversion of all operational activities. The Corporation plans to convert to metric as the need arises in various areas to be compatible with the Canadian plans. The Federal Highway Administration's efforts in this sphere include the appointment of a coordinating task force; establishment of a policy requiring dual measurements; publication of a booklet - The International System of Units: Conversion Factors and Table Equivalents; and fostering planning and research. The Federal Aviation Administration is assessing the impact of conversion on U.S. air transportation. Comments are also made regarding activity in the Federal Railroad Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Coast Guard.
