TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
Data base management systems are the key to meaningful transportation systems integrated as part of the overall business system of an organization. All systems should use common, real time data, captured at the source and not data that has been manipulated by conventional file update routines which are often not accomplished in a timely manner. Interactive systems can be developed to allow managers, using high level language, access to the data base directly to obtain useful, real-time information. Real-time, as described here, requires that data be on-line, updated as events occur, and that the data be integrated at remote terminals. Transportation and Distribution Managers must manage and control their operations through systems and must move in the direction of a total system approach. A significant commitment is necesary to make integrated systems a reality. Data base management systems help transportation management perform its basic functions by providing the vehicle for the development of integrated operational and information systems.
