AWARENESS OF RISK AND SELF RESTRICTED DRIVING IN OLDER DRIVERS

Various abilities that deteriorate with age are important to driving. Most older drivers recognize their own reduced abilities and compensate for them to some degree. This report details a study which developed and pilot tested a self-report measure of senior drivers' awareness of their own abilities and risks, and compensations to reduce their risks. The study also assessed the effects of age on the ability to compensate and recommends methods to validate the self-report test against objective tests of driving performance and underlying abilities. A review of the literature identified testing methods for risk measurement of elderly drivers. Qualitative background information was gathered from senior drivers, trainers, and testers. The self-report instrument developed is called the Senior Driver Research Inventory, and a revised version of this instrument was applied in a pilot test on senior drivers age 50 to 79. The report presents results from the 167 completed inventories obtained from the pilot test and evaluates the effectiveness of the inventory as a measurement tool.
