SHALLOW ANCHOR RESISTANCE TO ECCENTRIC UPLIFT LOAD
Model tests are described of shallow circular anchor resistance to eccentrically located pullout force in relatively loose sand, in which anchor plates (made out of 1/8 - in. thick aluminum) and model plates (of diameter 2.4 inch and 3 inches) were used in a 2-part laboratory testing program. The first phase was designed to determine the pullout resistance of the anchors with central pull with a rigid shaft at the center of the plate at various embedment ratios. This was necessary to evaluate the critical embedment ratio beyond which the plates behave as deep anchors. The second phase of the testing program aimed at determining the pullout resistance of the anchor plates with vertical eccentric uplift load applied by a cable connected with eccentricities for shallow embedment ratios. The test results (the mathematical analysis is detailed) show that for a given embedment ratio, the eccentric load resistance decreases with the increase of the eccentricity ratio. It is also shown that for a given eccentricity ratio, the ratio of net resistances/net pullout resistance (P sub e (o)/P sub o) is approximately the same for all embedment ratios. More tests are needed in various types of soil (dense and loose) to confirm this general trend.
