STRAIN RATE BEHAVIOR OF COMPACTED SILT
Strain controlled triaxial tests of the consolidated-drained type on compacted samples of a clavey silt show that the deviator stress at fialure increases with increasing rate of axial strain up to a certain critical confining pressure, beyond which the deviator stress at failure decreases with increasing stain rate. A change in the cohesional component of the shear strength due to a change in the axial strain rate is generally accompanied by an opposite change in the angle of internal friction. Further, samples consolidated at confining pressures greater than the critical pressure when sheared at strain rates slower than 0.083% per min yield values of cohesion and friction angle that are independent of the confining pressure. Only the developed friction angles appear to be unaffected by a moisture content change. The ultimate bearing capacity of a one foot diam circular foundation estimated from the laboratory determined c-phi values undergo a two to three-fold change as the failure time is increased from 50 min to 500 min. /ASCE/
