STANDARD SPECIFICATION FOR CUTBACK BITUMEN (METRIC UNITS)

This, the first revision of the South African standard specification for cutback bitumen, uses metric units. Major changes are the omission of special requirements when using torbanite bitumen and of the intermediate curing grades from straight-run bitumen; the reclassification of viscosity grades in terms of kinematic viscosity at 10 degrees C.; and the specification of grades that have a harder residue after distillation and a narrower distillation range. After defining the scope of the standard and listing definitions of the terms used, the standard sets out general requirements, grade requirements, and requirements for packing, marking, sampling and compliance with the specification. Tables give requirements (in terms of kinematic viscosity, distillation requirements, residue and penetration) and test methods to be used for designating the various rapid- and medium-curing grades. Appendices respectively list the standards quoted; notes to purchasers; application temperatures for various uses (including two methods of estimation of curing temperatures and A comparison of typical results obtained with them); a table of approximate Saybolt furol viscosities for the various grades; and a comparison of the former and the new grades. /TRRL/
