ROAD SAFETY PLAN FOR NORTHERN IRELAND 1995/96-1997/98

This plan presents the road safety strategy for Northern Ireland for the period from 1995/96 to 1997/98. Despite substantial reduction in fatal and serious casualties from road accidents in Northern Ireland during recent years, it was agreed that there should be a concerted effort to reduce casualties further. As a result, the Road Safety Review Group was established, to ensure that a strategic approach is taken to coordinate the planning and delivery of road safety measures. Its plan will be reviewed annually, with a major review and update during its third year. It contains 109 action points relating to a wide range of road safety activities. Its key actions are: (1) further development of the strategic approach to road safety; (2) coordination between key safety organisations; (3) provision of schools, libraries and playgroups with approved free road safety education materials; (4) continued cycling proficiency scheme for schools; (5) continued school education in road traffic studies; (6) continued funding of the Road Safety Council of Northern Ireland; (7) major publicity campaigns and programme; (8) road safety research; (9) safety engineering schemes; and (10) new works prioritised by accident reduction potential.
