TRANSPORT PLANNING: IN THE UK, USA AND EUROPE
The book discusses the evolution of transport planning, and describes clearly: (1) its strengths and weaknesses; (2) its achievements; (3) its relationships with actual policy decisions; and (4) its likely future directions. Part 1 examines the development of transport planning, drawing on experience from the UK and the USA. It assesses the evaluation methods of the 1970s, and discusses the effects of the contemporary market approach to transport provision. Part 2 provides a comparative analysis of transport planning and evaluation in France, Germany and The Netherlands, and presents evidence that important common issues are likely to lead to the wide adoption of transport planning on an international scale by trans-national agencies. Part 3 analyses the key issues facing transport planning into the 21st century. Transport demand is likely to be affected extensively by demographic, economic and technological factors, so that it will be urgent to ensure the availability and optimal use of appropriate infrastructures. The author argues that the transport planner's roles are to: (1) ensure equitable access to transport for all; (2) help to promote economic development; and (3) make the city an attractive place in which to live and work.
