CALCULATION OF RAILWAY NOISE 1995

This Technical Memorandum presents methods to be used to determine eligibility for insulation of residential property for railway and other guided transport system noise, under the conditions specified in the Noise Insulation (Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems) Regulations 1995. First, it sets out a general step-by-step method of calculation for predicting noise levels at a given distance from a railway, allowing for various factors including: (1) the noise from individual trains running on each segment of track; (2) the intervening ground cover; (3) the alignment of the track; and (4) the site layout. The aim has been to permit prediction in as many cases as possible. Some additional procedures are then given to predict railway noise in some specific cases, including some types of noise from locomotives and rolling stock, and noise from guided transport systems other than railways, where the general method cannot be applied. 14 worked examples are included. Some procedures and requirements are also given for the measurement of noise from railways and other guided transport situations; this is useful in situations where the preferred methods presented here cannot be applied.
